Goodbye to Rambo

Article Abstract:

The ruthless, macho style of management adopted by some National Health Service (NHS) managers in the search for greater efficiency and improved value for money, has been criticised by health service chief executive Duncan Nichol. Nichol's call for a gentler style of management has the support of health secretary Virginia Bottomley who is to issue new guidelines on health service staff's rights to complain. However, the proposed appeals procedure appears to lack any independent element, and professional bodies argue that the emergence of a results-driven health service encourages managers to conceal any failings.

Outlook: unsettled

Article Abstract:

Shadow Health Secretary David Blunkett disagrees with Health Secretary Virginia Bottomley on the future of the reformed National Health Service. Blunket has suggested that the NHS will be damaged by trusts' financial difficulties, the 1.5% pay limit, reorganisation of London hospitals and disaffection of dentists. Inadequate funding may also inhibit the introduction of community care. However, Bottomley is optimistic about the future. She remains committed to restructuring acute care in London. She is also intent on raising the profile of mental illness.

Article Abstract:

Marion Roe has been appointed as chairwomen of the UK health committee. Roe is a keen supporter of National Health Service reforms and was previously chairwoman of the Hospices Group and the South East Thames Regional Health Authority. She will seek cross-party agreement on such issues as community care reforms, NHS dental services and the European Commission directive on tobacco advertising. She believes that the role of the committee is to observe and make constructive statements concerning the conduct of government departments.
