Group B streptococci during pregnancy: a comparison of two screening and treatment protocols

Article Abstract:

Screening and treating pregnant women for group B streptococci a few weeks before delivery can significantly reduce the risk that the fetus will contract this serious infection. Researchers evaluated two screening techniques, each of which was given to about 3,500 pregnant women. In one group, only high-risk women were treated with antibiotics and in the other, only women whose vaginal smears tested positive for group B streptococci were treated. Treating only those with evidence of infection significantly reduced the rate of fetal infection without increasing antibiotic use.

Optimal timing of ampicillin administration to pregnant women for establishing bactericidial levels in the prophylaxis of group B Streptococcus

Article Abstract:

A study to determine the time necessary to achieve and maintain bactericidal concentrations of ampicillin in the cord blood is conducted. The increase in the ratio of cord to maternal serum ampicillin levels is directly related to time, suggesting a decrease in the clearance of ampicillian in the newborns as compared to the mothers.

Optimal dosing of penicillin G in the third trimester of pregnancy for prophylaxis against group B Streptococcus

Article Abstract:

One million units of penicillin given intravenously every four hours should prevent group B streptococcal infection of the fetus during delivery. More frequent doses are not necessary.
