Groups collaborate on hospital performance initiative

Article Abstract:

People would have access to local hospitals adhered to practice standards for treatment of acute myocardial infarction, heart failure and pneumonia through national quality initiative. Hospitals in the voluntary effort would report their performance to the U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesE Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which would post the data on its Web site.

Physicians, public at odds over errors

Article Abstract:

Researchers report that patients and doctors disagree over the best way to curb medical mistakes. The report published in the 12 December 2002 New England Journal of Medicine revealed that 35 percent of the doctors surveyed and 42 percent of the public reported experiencing a medical error in their own care or in the care of a family member.

Study outlines deficiencies in American health care

Article Abstract:

A recent study conducted by Rand Health and published in the New England Journal of Medicine on June 26, 2003, confirms that recommended health care procedures are not as universal as had been hoped. Many adults receive only about half the measures recommended for their conditions.
