Power of language in a ward for the care of older people

Article Abstract:

There is a need for effective nurse/patient communication but it is often ineffective leading to misunderstanding and confusion. A study looked at the routine use of language by nurses in a ward caring for older patients and found that overt power was often exerted in instructions given to the patients. Other forms of linguistic control included persuasion, when encouraging patients to eat or encouraging them to undergo a particular procedure.

A storm of public outrage when Undercover Nurse secretly filmed colleagues on a general medical ward refusing an elderly patient's request for a bedpan, leaving another patient to die alone and eating patients' food for BBC1's Panorama. Patients deserve confidentiality and privacy as they are in a vulnerable position when they are in hospital and they need to be protected.
