HHS funding bill breaks Medicare pledge to pay claims in 17 days

Article Abstract:

The 1993 appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services includes a promise to pay electronically filed Medicare claims within 14 days but reneges on the promise to pay other participating physicians within 17 days. The government's pledge to pay interest on correct claims not paid within the prescribed time period has been changed to require interest after 30 days. However, this provision is contained in the urban aid bill, which may face a veto.

Delayed pain: Medicare curbs will hurt little in '94, more later

Article Abstract:

Medicare physician payment curbs will not greatly affect physicians during 1994, but the curbs will increase over the next four years. In addition, the resource-based relative value scale will be implemented, influencing payments further. The effects of these changes will vary widely according to a physician's mix of services; however, medical laboratories, ophthalmologists and orthopedists will probably lose the most money.

Medicare volume bonuses likely for 1994

Article Abstract:

Medicare physician reimbursement rates will probably increase in 1994 despite health care reform. For example, under the Clinton budget, surgical services reimbursement would increase 10.2% and primary care reimbursement would rise by 6.6%. However, Congress needs to cut Medicare by $48.3 billion to meet the proposed 1994 budget, and it has not yet decided how to target physician payment for part of this money.
