HIV seroincidence estimates among at-risk populations in Buenos Aires and Montevideo: Use of the serologic testing algorithm for recent HIV seroconversion

Article Abstract:

The annualized incidences of HIV-1 infection in different at-risk groups in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, during a 5-year period between 1998 and 2003 were estimated by using the serological testing algorithm for HIV seroconversion. The high seroincidence rates detected in some vulnerable, at-risk groups in Buenos Aires and Montevideo could imply that these cities are facing the emergence of a larger, heterosexually driven epidemic, although it might still be mostly concentrated in high-risk groups.

Intersubtype BF recombinants of HIV-1 in a population of injecting drug users in Argentina

Article Abstract:

Sequences of a region of the gag, pol and vpu genes of HIV-1 were studied for determining the intersubtype BF recombinants of HIV-1 using the samples of twenty-one injection drug users (IDUs), residing in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The results indicated the predominance of BF recombinants and the presence of a high percentage of sequences closely associated with CRF12_BF in the IDU population.

Flash-heat inactivation of HIV-1 in human milk a potential method to reduce postnatal transmission in developing countries

Article Abstract:

A simple method of flash-heat to inactivate HIV in naturally infected breast milk from HIV-positive mothers is investigated. It is indicated that flash-heat is capable of inactivating cell-free HIV-1 in naturally infected breast milk from HIV-positive women.
