HIV-specific antibodies but not T-cell responses are associated with protection in seronegative partners of HIV-1 infected individuals in Cambodia

Article Abstract:

The analyses of humoral and T-cell immune responses, in vitro susceptibility to HIV-1 infection, and B-chemokine production in a group of EU partners of HIV-1 infected individuals in a Cambodian population were carried out to identify factors protecting against HIV-1 infection. The contrast between the presence of HIV-specific lgA and the lack of detectable T-cell responses in peripheral blood from EUs supports the hypothesis that the induction of mucosal humoral responses might play a main role in conferring protection to sexually exposed individuals.

HIV incidence and factors contributed to retention in a 12-month follow-up study of injection drug users in Sichuan province, China

Article Abstract:

HIV-1 seroconversion and subtype are evaluated and factors associated with cohort retention are analyzed for subjects' baseline sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics in a 12-month follow-up study of injection drug users (IDUs). No drug-using or sexual behaviors are found to be associated with retention and the results suggest that HIV is spreading rapidly to more geographic areas along drug trafficking routes in China.
