HMO merger targets market for Medicare managed care

Article Abstract:

The prospective merger between FHP International Corp. and PacifiCare Health Systems will create the fifth biggest managed care company in the US totaling 3.9 mil members. Annual revenues from the new company are projected to reach $8.6 bil annually. Although some administrative-staff layoffs are inevitable, no major consolidation or restructuring is anticipated and the nature of patient services are not expected to change substantially.

Learning from experience: Mercy Health System, a regional system, bought more than 200 physician practices to fend off competition

Article Abstract:

Cincinnati, OH-based Mercy Health System and Madison, WI-based Dean Health Systems formed Dean Mercy Physician Partners, a physician practice management firm, in mid-Sep 1996. The new company will provide Mercy with more flexible physician agreements and experienced managed care services. Dean Health Systems has provided such services for several decades.

Two large California managed care firms to merge

Article Abstract:

Health Systems International Inc. and Foundation Health Corp. have announced their intent to merge. The announcement exemplifies the ongoing consolidation in the health maintenance organization industry. Foundation Health Systems Inc., the resulting company, is expected to become the fourth largest publically-traded managed care entity in the nation.
