HRT or not HRT?: Hormone replacement therapy is thought to be the best way of preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women

Article Abstract:

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) continues to be controversial in the UK, but the National Osteoporosis Society believes that HRT is the best way of preventing and treating osteoporosis. An early menopause is a risk factor in the development of osteoporosis. There are new designer oestrogens entering the market, known as selective estrogen receptor modulators, which are said to be effective in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, although their long term safety has not been proven. Symptoms of the menopause can also be treated by homeopathic methods, although there is a lack of evidence of effectiveness.

The great leveller

Article Abstract:

The death of someone famous from cancer can prompt a significant rise in public awareness of cancer. It can also bring depression among cancer patients, who are made aware that even being wealthy and having access to a wide range of treatments will not necessarily bring a cure. Specialist cancer nurses find that discussing the experiences of a celebrity with cancer can help patients to voice their own fears. Some observers believe that too much emphasis is placed on cancer, while patients with less high profile conditions are overlooked.
