HSC's 'cautious satisfaction' over annual accident report

Article Abstract:

The Health and Safety Commission's 1991/92 annual report claims that 23.2 million working days are lost annually due to work-related injuries. About 1.5 out of every 100,000 employees die from injuries sustained at work. Numbers are lower than in previous years because of the move away from higher risk industry; coal mining employee figures have decreased by 50% since 1986/87. Many accidents are due to common causes that can be avoided through risk assessment, safety management and training. Death rates in the construction industry have increased to 9.5 in every 100,000 since 1989/90.

Cover points

Article Abstract:

The implementation of the European Community Personal Protective Equipment Product Directive will provide harmonisation of standards and product certification in Europe. Products will now have to achieve and display a CE mark. The packaging needs to include the manufacturer's name and address, pictograms showing the use of product, test scores, reference to where more information is available and size. Information sheets must be available that include information such as substances used in manufacture of the product, which may cause allergies.
