Hail Marie Curie

Article Abstract:

The UK-based Marie Curie cancer care service was founded in July 1948, by T. Bernard Robinson. His aim was to both help alleviate the suffering of cancer patients while trying to find a cure. The charity raised over 4,000 pounds sterling in 1948, growing into a 61 million pounds sterling cancer care network by 1998, employing over 6,000 nurses in 222 health areas. There are 11 specialist palliative care units, caring for about 4,600 patients annually. The charity runs courses which train health professionals how to care for people with cancer.

Courting disaster

Article Abstract:

The UK health service may have to fight more court cases concerning job-related stress. An ex-employee of Ashworth Hospital, Liverpool, recently received a settlement for stress he suffered whilst working under a bullying regime at the hospital. The Royal College of Nurses is investigating 30 other cases. The settlement may encourage other health personnel to consider claims, despite the difficulties associated with proving injury related to job stress.
