Handle with care
Article Abstract:
The Health and Safety Commission has produced recommendations on manual handling to support a European Community directive. Specific guidelines for the Health service will be available from the Health Services Advisory Committee in November 1992. Guidance will advise on risk assessment and prevention of injury. Managers are responsible for organising workload to minimise manual handling. Mechanical aids should be used for lifting. Staff should be trained in risk assessment and handling techniques. New uniform designs may facilitate handling.

A third edition of The National Back Pain Association's publication 'The Guide to the Handling of patients' has been produced in response to European Community regulations effective from Jan 1, 1993. It emphasises avoiding potentially dangerous handling situations, assessing the situation and acting appropriately to minimise risk. New sections cover management responsibility for good practice and legal responsibilities. The guide suggests various methods on which training may be based. It provides guidance on clothing, posture and equipment.
