Happy families

Article Abstract:

Research teams need to act in a cooperative spirit as genetic technology advances. Genetic research centering on the relationship of disease expression in families has been used successfully in both diabetes and arthritis research. This type of research requires identifying and testing vast numbers of affected patients and their families for the presence of similar genetic material. Umbrella institutions, such as the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council, have been sharing these limited numbers of samples with interested research teams. Ethical issues surrounding subsequent patent rights and confidentiality remain to be resolved.

Biomedical research and insider trading

Article Abstract:

There are several ways in which charges of insider trading can arise in biomedical research. Insider trading occurs when someone uses non-public information to profit from the purchase or sale of publicly traded stock. In biomedical research, this could occur if an employee of a company involved in biomedical research profits from corporate information. A non-employee who acts as a consultant to the company may also be liable. A researcher who discloses information to an outsider would be liable as would a journal editor, reviewer or a reporter who profits from information in an unpublished manuscript.

Bioetiquette

Article Abstract:

Several benefits are associated with the integration of ethical practices in biomedical research. Also known as bioethics, ethical practices in biomedical research help alleviate the public's negative image of scientists. It promotes mannerly conducts and raises the standard of civility among practitioners while taking into account regulative and symbolic functions. Moreover, bioethics urges forward sanctions and fines for the violation of scientific rules and misconduct.
