Heading for a showdown in the west

Article Abstract:

The hospital budget of Cornwall and Isle of Scilly Health Authority, UK, is being reduced by 30%, with 300 nursing jobs likely to be cut. The cuts will be made by April 1998 and include the closure of elderly care wards, reduced GP and midwife support and the closure of selected casualty services between certain hours. Nurses facing redundancy will have few job opportunites as Cornwall's unemployment level is 5.5%, double the national average. Nurses feel they will have no option but to move away from the area in search of employment.

Novel pursuits: ever felt that hospital life had all the ingredients of fiction?. Former student nurse Joanna Traynor set her imagination to work on her experiences

Article Abstract:

A former student nurse used her experiences of nursing to write a novel about a student nurse, which won her the SAGA prize for a new black literary talent. She claims that the book is only partly autobiographical that it was written to give another point of view about the differences in how people lead their lives and how they are each as valid as each other. The author herself has frequently changed direction and now plans to concentrate on writing full time.
