Health and safety training in the EU

Article Abstract:

A study of health and safety training in the workplace, in the European Union (EU) nations, found it was focused mostly on shift workers, members of trade unions and public sector workers. Health and safety training varied between the EU nations, with Greek workers receiving the least training and East Germany and the UK the most. The amount of vocational training often differed from the amount of health and safety training for employees. Some 40.6% of respondents, in the UK, had health and safety training compared to 10.7% in Greece. Some 12,000 households took part in the study.

The UK by comparison...

Article Abstract:

The UK had a lower incidence of deaths in the workplace compared to Spain, Italy and France, but the UK also registered the highest number of reported cases of illness and accidents in the workplace. A comparative study was carried out in 1991 and it involved 12,000 residents of countries in the European Union. The study could be criticised because the information relied on accurate reporting by the respondents and details concerning the occupation of the respondents were not available. The type of occupation is highly indicative to the number of accidents reported.

Held to account

Article Abstract:

A large gap exists between the monitoring of health and of safety in companies. That gap needs to be closed. In the 1992 Company Level Survey, 71% of the 176 large companies said they regularly collected information about accidents and injuries at their plants at corporate level. A significant 85% of companies in the construction industry collected such data.
