The clinician's assistant provides continuity of care for patients and their families right from the initial assessment to discharge after the operation. Heart to heart

Article Abstract:

Nurses at the Papworth Hospital Transplant Continuing Care Unit in the UK offer support to heart, lung and heart-lung transplant recipients under an outpatient regime. Patients may need advice on appropriate levels of physical activity, on sexual activity, or on returning to employment. They may need help with socio-psychological problems or advice on the side-effects of drugs. Nurses also educate patients about signs of organ rejection, and on the need for drug compliancy, and are alert for signs of infection or the long-term complications associated with transplant operations.

Life in the balance

Article Abstract:

Papworth Hospital is one of the UK's leading cardiothoracic centres and undertakes many successful organ transplants each year. A key to its success is the carrying out of a detailed and accurate multidisciplinary assessment of each patient in order to identify who is most likely to benefit from transplantation. The care of patients is coordinated by a clinician's assistant who is responsible for patients' progress until they are discharged.
