Heard the one about the nurse and the engineer?

Article Abstract:

UK nursing unions are concerned about the way a 5 million pounds sterling nurse consultant recruitment campaign has been handled by the UK government, as the public perception appears to imply professionals will gain up to 40,000 pound sterling in salary for little actual nursing skill. Low starting salaries for both nurses and civil engineers has drawn comparisons from several observers who are urging civil engineers to reconsider their jobs and move into nursing instead.

Overseas aid: The Pitfalls

Article Abstract:

NHS trusts need to fill vacancies with high quality appropriately trained staff, and when recruiting from abroad, they often do not have the time to shop around for agencies. It is important to develop a good working relationship with the agency, as well as forging links with the Home Office and Overseas Labour Service. It is also important to be honest with the interviewees with regard to information about the area they will be working, transport links and accommodation.

Who'd be a steward?: They may be able to advise nurses on rights and negotiate on pay, but RCN stewards know little about employment law and even RCN policies. So what is being done to remedy this?

Article Abstract:

An RCN report acknowledges that nurse stewards have a difficult job to do and that the job has evolved since the 1970s. They require a certain flexiblity to respond to changing circumstances and needs. Some RCN members believe that they suffer because stewards are overworked, and there is a call for a strong recruitment campaign to recruit and retain stewards.
