A model to standardise mortality of severely malnourished children using nutritional status on admission to therapeutic feeding centres

Article Abstract:

Eighteen feeding centers set-up during emergency operations in Africa were studied to come up with a simple model that could calculate the number of deaths that is to be expected in such a center from the height, weight and oedema of children on admission. The model that was generated through the study was relatively accurate in predicting individual probability of death, making it a useful tool for center supervisors in assessing the expected number of deaths among children who are admitted for treatment of malnutrition.

Risk factors for fatal diarrhoea among dehydrated malnourished children in a Madagascar hospital

Article Abstract:

A study of diarrhoea-inflicted undernourished children in a Madagascar hospital reveals that breast-feeding protects these children against death. The major risk factors for mortality are reduced weight and plasma protein level, dehydration and persistent diarrhoea. Non-breast-fed children are more susceptible to diarrhoea than breast-fed children. Hyponatremia is also a major risk factor, as revealed by multivariate analyses.
