Heart rate and blood pressure variabilities are increased in pregnancy-induced hypertension

Article Abstract:

Heart rates and blood pressures in women with pregnancy-induced hypertension may be more variable than in pregnant women without high blood pressure. Measurements were taken in 14 women with pregnancy-induced hypertension and 16 women with normal pregnancies breathing normally, and with slow, deep breathing. Women with hypertension had more heart rate and blood pressure fluctuations than normal women. Differences decreased while slow breathing. This disturbance may result from an absence of the normal decrease of neural control of these systems during pregnancy.

Expression of placental low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein and scavenger receptors AI/AII transcripts in the baboon

Article Abstract:

Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP) is present in greater amounts in villous tissue of the placenta whereas scavenger receptor AII is present in greater amounts in syncytiotrophoblast cells, according to a study of baboons. This study was done to determine whether the placenta can derive cholesterol from other sources besides LDL cholesterol to make progesterone. If so, the pregnancy can be maintained by progesterone even in the absence of LDL cholesterol.

Placental expression of syndecan 1 is diminished in preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women with a serious complication of pregnancy called preeclampsia have decreased levels of a protein called syndecan 1 in the placenta. This protein is normally present on the surface of cells, although its exact function in the placenta is not known. In other cells, it binds growth factors and antithrombin III.
