Hemochromatosis patients are untapped source of blood as war, shortages loom

Article Abstract:

The American Hemochromatosis Society wants the US Department of Health and Human Services to relax the legal restrictions on using blood taken from patients with hemochromatosis so more blood will be available for transfusion. Hemochromatosis is a disease caused by too much iron in blood. Most patients are treated by removing blood from the body on a regular basis. This blood is discarded, but it could be used to add 200,000 to 3 million units to the US blood supply every year.

Pediatrics group recommends public cord blood banking

Article Abstract:

The American Academy of Pediatrics has provided a revised policy on cord blood banking in order to help in clarifying the facts and enable physicians to counsel expectant parents regarding these options. The revised policy has encouraged the parents to donate their newborn's cord blood to public cord banks, as they can be made available to those in need rather than private cord blood banks.
