High Prevalence of Chlamydial and Gonococcal Infection in Women Entering Jails and Juvenile Detention Centers--Chicago, Birmingham, and San Francisco, 1998

Article Abstract:

New urine tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia can be used to screen women who are being admitted to a correctional facility. Genital chlamydial and gonococcal infections can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. In Chicago, Birmingham, AL and San Francisco, urine samples from female detainees were tested using the ligase chain reaction (LCR) assay. In Chicago, 27% of adolescent girls tested positive for chlamydial infection and 11% tested positive for gonorrhea. In Birmingham, 22% and 17% tested positive for chlamydial and gonorrhea, respectively, and in San Francisco, 16% and 6% tested positive, respectively.

Contribution of selected metabolic diseases to early childhood deaths -- Virginia, 1996-2001

Article Abstract:

An undiagnosed metabolic disorder could be responsible for at least one percent of all deaths from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Of 793 children in Virginia who died before the age of three, post-mortem blood tests showed that eight had a metabolic disorder that may have contributed to their death. Other studies have shown that metabolic disorders may cause up to five percent of all SIDS deaths.
