High endemicity of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 among pregnant women in Peru

Article Abstract:

A large cross-sectional study of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection in Lima, Peru, is conducted to determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with HTLV-1 infection in pregnant women. The results have shown HTLV-1 is maintained in Peru by a low level of neonatally acquired infection that is amplified by sexual transmission and the epidemiological data has shown that the risk of infection is greatest for children breast-feeding after 12 months of age.

Differential upregulation of CD38 on different T-cell subsets may influence the ability to reconstitute CD4(super +) T cells under successful highly active antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

The differential expression of the activation marker CD38 on CD45RO(super +) and CD45RO(super -) subsets of CD4(super +) and CD8(super +) T cells in a group of drug-naive HIV-infected patients was analyzed. A high correlation between viral replication and T-cell activation in agreement with prior reports was found.

(super 13)C-Methionine breath test detects distinct hepatic mitochindrial dysfunction in HIV-infected patients with normal serum lactate

Article Abstract:

Two HIV-seronegative low risk subjects carrying CD4-cells specific for gpl 120 that could be expanded in vitro were identified. The persistence of HIV-specific human naive CD4-lymphocytes in the absence of antigenic stimulation is studied.
