High hopes

Article Abstract:

The National Childbirth Trust and the department of health's 'Changing Childbirth' Implementation Team have joined together to launch a campaign aimed at making women in the UK more aware of the choices available to them during pregnancy and childbirth. This follows research which indicates that there has been variable progress in implementing some of the key recommendations of 'Changing Childbirth.' Some midwives fear that the latest campaign will encourage women to ask for services which simply cannot be provided.

One-to-one midwife scheme great success

Article Abstract:

Queen Charlotte's and Hammersmith Hospitals in London, England, have been running a one-to-one midwife scheme which has proved extremely successful. This has included having a named midwife to provide antenatal and intrapartum care, with support from a midwife partner. It was found that the scheme resulted in lower rates of epidural anaesthesia, continuous electronic monitoring, analgesia and episiotomy. It also served to increase the job satisfaction of the midwives involved.

RCN challenges Malone over qualified nurse numbers

Article Abstract:

There has been a rise of 18,000 in the number of qualified nurses employed in the UK since 1991, according to health minister Gerald Malone. This claim is being challenged by the RCN, which states that the number of nursing and midwifery staff in the NHS has actually declined, from 395,000 in 1990 to 343,830 in 1995. The RCN also states that many of the additional qualified nurses are working in GP practices, rather than in hospital wards.
