Subway performance: an excavation

Article Abstract:

The New York City subway system is a network of theatrical performances, both sanctioned and unsanctioned, that contribute to humanizing the vastness of the system and minimizing the isolation that commuters generally feel. The performers include entertainers, vendors and beggars and also musicians selected and approved by the Music Under New York program. The subway performances reflect the cultural diversity of New York City and foster a sense of community.
