History lesson

Article Abstract:

The history, research and predictions concerning AIDs and HIV are presented. Worldwide, 2.5 million people at least have developed AIDs, and 13 million are HIV positive, according to estimates by the World Health Organization. Since 1982, there have been 7,431 AIDS cases in the UK until March 1993, 62% of which have died, according to figures from the Dept of Health. Much money has been spent on research for AIDS cures in the last 10 years, but prevention is the only cure. However, safer sex and prevention do not seem to have worked so far and are not longlasting. Previous homophobic attitudes linked with AIDS predictions are also discussed.

Article Abstract:

Effective education in diabetes self-treatment requires advance preparation. It should begin within 12 hours of diagnosis. Information should be presented in topic areas such as recognising hypoglycaemia, checking blood sugar and administering insulin. Hospital wards should make educational aids and information leaflets available. Nurses should keep abreast of developments in diabetes cotrol. Patients should receive information on support groups and available literature.
