History of a disease

Article Abstract:

Leprosy has existed since the 5th century BC, but reached its peak in Europe during the Crusades. The disease was passed to the Americas by slave traders and European settlers. In 1941, dapsone was used to treat the disease and in 1981, a multidrug therapy began to be used widely with great success.

Rapid disease surveillance

Article Abstract:

The Ministry of Health and Child Welfare in Zimbabwe recognized the need for a rapid disease surveillance system in 1989. Zimbabwe's system focuses on controlling dysentery, malaria, measles, neonatal tetanus, polio and watery diarrhoeal disease.

Brief history of an age-old disease

Article Abstract:

Tuberculosis has existed since at least the last Ice Age but the bacteria which caused it was not discovered until 1882. The BCG vaccine was made in 1921, but only prevents TB in those not yet exposed to the bacteria.
