Homeless where the heart is

Article Abstract:

The establishment of Primary Care Act Pilot Sites (PCAPS) allowed a health care facility to be set up in North Staffordshire, UK to provide support and health services for homeless people. The changing economical and social face of North Staffordshire has led to high unemployment, poor housing and social isolation. The majority of homeless people are aged from 16 to 25 years old, resulting in further problems associated with drugs, drink and sexually transmitted diseases. The PCAPS provides advice and medical support for those who wish to use the service, without judging homeless people.

Bars to health

Article Abstract:

A nurse describes her personal experience of health care in UK prisons. Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons states that prisoners should have the same level of health care as any member of society, but this does not occur in practice. Prisoners do not have recourse to any complaints procedure concerning their health care, and prison doctors have no audit or peer review. Prison officers frequently cancel the short periods of exercise in the fresh air, which, in any case, is limited to walking, the nutrition is poor, and the conditions are detrimental to mental health.

Mean state of health: in an effort to provide basic care for homeless people in Washington DC, a public infirmary was set up

Article Abstract:

A nurse describes her time as a nurse volunteer at a major shelter for homeless people in Washington DC. A new infirmary area was opened at the shelter and most of the clients were showing signs of living on the streets, such as respiratory infections and hypothermia. Many men arriving at the infirmary were already extremely ill as they chose to ignore their ailments due to the conditions of understaffing and overcrowding in public hospitals.
