Hospitalized uninsured have higher medical injury risk

Article Abstract:

Health risks for uninsured patients must be considered in formulating health care reform. Based on a review of 30,195 patients in New York State, uninsured hospital patients have twice the risk of injury due to substandard care as insured patients. Another study of patients hospitalized in Massachusetts and Maryland for 12 avoidable conditions such as asthma showed that uninsured patients were more likely to be hospitalized for the illnesses. The difference was significant for 10 of the conditions in Massachusetts and seven in Maryland.

ERISA ruling threatens N.Y. health care system

Article Abstract:

A federal judge struck down New York State's billing system because it violated the Federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. The system had added a 13% surcharge to hospital bills for commercial insurers. The decision casts into doubt New York's efforts to pay for uninsured patients by taxing other segments of the health care system. Eliminating such surcharges would cost New York State hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenues.
