"Hot" labs take on dangerous pathogens

Article Abstract:

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expanding the number of biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) labs in the US. These are the labs that study the most dangerous infectious organisms, including smallpox virus, Ebola virus, and anthrax bacteria. The agency will build a second BSL-4 lab at its headquarters in Atlanta, GA, one at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, MT, and one at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

Fake worlds offer real medicine: virtual reality finding a role in treatment and training

Article Abstract:

Doctors are using virtual reality computer programs to treat everything from anxiety and phobias to smoking, pain, obesity, and drug addiction. Some medical schools combine virtual reality programs with dummies to teach students surgical procedures. A company called Virtually Better develops and sells hardware and software to doctors who are interested in using virtual reality programs to help their patients.

Physician-robot makes the rounds

Article Abstract:

Surgeon Garth Ballantyne is one of the latest surgeons to convert the use of robots to help surgeons who are offsite stay in contact with their patients. The 5-foot tall robot created by California-based In-Touch Health displays a real-time video of the physician on its flat screen.
