How do I perform a lumbar puncture and analyze the results to diagnose bacterial meningitis?

Article Abstract:

Diagnostic lumbar punctures (LPs) techniques that may decrease the risk of adverse events and the evidence about test accuracy of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis of patients with bacterial meningitis are reviewed. Use of small-gauge atraumatic needles that decrease the risk of headache, future research focusing on evaluating interventions to optimize the success of diagnostic LP and improving training in procedural skills are recommended.
