How nurses cope with exposure to HIV infection

Article Abstract:

A study of how nurses in a Canadian hospital coped with being exposed to HIV infection suggests that nurses need a non-judgemental working environmental to allow them to voice their concerns over infection and resolve their own irrational emotions. This could be achieved via support groups, discussions and individual counselling. Some nurses did not reveal that they had been exposed to HIV infection, for fear of being accused of acting irresponsibly. They also tried to hide their own fears by avoiding situations where they might have to confront their fears, such as discussions about AIDS.

Nurses are expected to play an important role in providing care to those affected by HIV related neurological dysfunctions, such as dementia, because of the growing incidence of such problems. An exploratory research study into the perceptions of AIDs patients and their nurses emphasises the importance of mental health care and specialist advice for nurses working in the field.

Home truths: palliative care nurses are in the front line as South Africa struggles to cope with its HIV epidemic

Article Abstract:

The HIV/AIDS in South Africa is placing a great strain on the country's hospitals. The government is responding by considering alternatives to care in hospitals and institutions. At Port Shepstone's South Coast Hospice, palliative care nurse specialists have developed a home-based care programme which allows patients to remain at home unless serious problems emerge.
