How rheumatoid arthritis affects patients and families: the family plays a vital role in the treatment of people with chronic rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic illness which causes inflammation of the lining of the joints and tendon sheaths of the body. A chronic illness affects other family members as well as the individual, and nurses must give support to both the patient and family in adjusting to the illness. Research has shown that spouses find it more difficult to perceive the disability, pain and stiffness suffered by their partners, but this can be improved through education. The illness can have a negative effect leading to poor body image which may affect sexual relationships. Social activity may be limited, which can lead to depression.
