How to talk to pregnant patients about risky behaviors

Article Abstract:

The use of alcohol, illegal drugs and risky sexual behavior can adversely effect the health of pregnant women and can result in addictions, illness or developmental problems in newborns. Physicians should incorporate questions about patients' risky behaviors in routine medical care. Zero tolerance for tobacco and alcohol is recommended. Pregnant women may be more motivated to undergo treatment for drug addiction to protect the health of their newborns.
