Article Abstract:

A debate entitled 'A New Deal for Patients' was held at the Liberal Club in London, UK and was attended by two Labour Party MPs. Nursing Times launched an opinion poll to collect nurses views and it emerged that almost 50% of nurses distrust the main political parties and do not consider the National Health Service (NHS) to be safe in their hands. The nursing profession is dubious about the new government recruitment campaign and wants the NHS to be able to focus on care-needs rather than on market forces. Results of the opinion poll are given.

Do mention the war

Article Abstract:

Nursing in the UK today is much more relaxed than it was when the National Health Service (NHS) began in 1948, according to retired nurses. Many of the nurses who worked within the NHS during its early years had trained during wartime, when they had to endure very challenging conditions. Hospitals had to operate with very limited supplies, and nurses had to observe many rules and regulations. They had to manage without a lot of equipment and supplies that today's nurses take for granted.

The pioneers

Article Abstract:

It was common for nurses who were working at the time when the UK National Health Service (NHS) began operating in 1948 to have mixed views about this development. They welcomed the fact that everyone would now have access to free medical and dental care, but also found that people began making unrealistic demands. They generally feel that the NHS has had a positive impact on people's lives, but recognize that improvements still need to be made.
