Images of health and illness

Article Abstract:

Media coverage of illness takes various forms, and the amount of coverage varies according to the illness. Common conditions, particularly those affecting the elderly, receive little coverage, whilst some patients, particularly children, and some conditions, particularly AIDS and cancer, receive a lot of attention. Some dramatic portrayals glamorize a condition, whilst others make fun of sufferers. News coverage and documentary presentations about disability tend to take one of a small range of approaches to their subject, and mental illness is frequently presented as a threat.

Please believe me: people who have myalgic encephalomyelitis have an uphill struggle to get their illness recognised and treated by medical staff

Article Abstract:

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is usually diagnosed by exlcusion, and may health practitioners believe it does not exist. The trigger can be emotional or physical stress following persistent virus infections and there could be an inherited predisposition to ME. ME is described by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as a 'mind-body' illness. Treatment aims to relieve symptoms and include rest, alternative therapies and a healthy diet.

How illness may affect patients' sexuality

Article Abstract:

Groups of male and female nurses were asked questions about illness and how it would affect them. Many showed concern about a lack of control relating to physical hygiene and appearange and lack of privacy. Being seriously ill can affect relationships with people and there may be concerns whether partners will be accepting or repulsed and distanced. Nurses should encourage patients and relatives to be open and honest.
