Immunisation: what do parents and health visitors in Barnet know about meningitis and Haemophilus influenzae type b?

Article Abstract:

Both health visitors and parents were underinformed about meningitis and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in the period before the launch of the Hib vaccine, according to a survey of 105 parents and 55 health visitors in Barnet District Health Authority. The vast majority of the parents had heard of meningitis, but only 12% had heard of the Hib vaccine, and many health visitors were also uncertain on the subject, pointing to a lack of information on meningitis and its prevention. The study results indicated health education programmes would be required before the introduction of the Hib vaccine.

Middle-class health behaviour: motivations and constraints in a sample of private patients

Article Abstract:

Claims by health professionals that changes to peoples' lifestyles can prevent some of the leading causes of premature death have led to moves to encourage people to look at ways of improving their health. A survey of 60 middle-class private patients indicates that exercise and diet are the main forms of health-improving behaviour, but health promotion work must also take into account certain limitations and motivations which have an influence on the way people change their lifestyles to become more healthy. Various constraining and motivating factors are considered.

Parents' views of child health surveillance

Article Abstract:

Parents were generally extremely satisfied with child health checks services undertaken in general practices and community clinics, although many were not asked about important subjects such as sleep problems and anxieties. There were not marked differences between general practices and community clincs, although many found clinic access times inconvenient.
