Implementation problems

Article Abstract:

Clinical supervision can only be genuinely effective if all team members participate in the decision-making process. It is vital to create a non-threatening environment in which everyone feels able to express doubts. There must be full managerial and organizational support. It must be recognized that clinical supervision can foster an emotionally charged environment, with potential for misunderstanding. When addressing a problem in supervision, it is vital to be open to all possibilities.

Communication at the heart of supervision

Article Abstract:

Clinical supervision in nursing provides the opportunity to examine issues related to professional practice. It enables nurses to clarify and objectify their experiences, but nurses involved in the process need good communication skills. Aspects of good communication include respect for the other person, acknowledgement of personal boundaries, and non-verbal elements. Clinical supervision should also be ethically motivated to avoid negative aspects, including control and competition.

Self-regulation: apply within

Article Abstract:

Plans by the UK government to introduce a national framework for educational and practice regulations in the nursing profession could signal the end of traditional self-regulation, which was established in 1979 by the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act. Nurses need to ensure they play a greater role in the self-regulation of their profession, with standards put in place to protect not only the patients but themselves.
