Implementing research in nurse-led care

Article Abstract:

A survey of bypass surgery patients in Glasgow, Scotland, revealed that the health service was failing to address risk factors for myocardial infarction and ischaemia during the period of waiting for surgery. Risk factors included obesity and smoking, but also the stress which patients experience when awaiting bypass surgery. The community health service noted the research findings and developed a nurse-led scheme to provide information, monitoring and counselling for patients on the waiting list. A subsequent survey revealed that patients who received this minimal intervention felt it had helped them make changes which would reduce risk.

Article Abstract:

Haeomostasis, an integral homoeostatic process that prevents blood loss from the vascular system, is achieved by extremely regulated and integrated vascular, cellular and humoral responses. Disorders of primary haemostasis are caused by a fall in the number of circulating platelets or a change in platelet function. If the patient has normal platelet count and bleeding time, then it is most likely that a disorder of secondary haemostasis is present. Nurses must take a detailed patient profile to identify patients at increased risk of developing disordered haeomostatis.
