Article Abstract:

Aid agencies are seeking ways to ensure their workers do not become the targets of violence and kidnapping. The murder of five International Committee of the Red Cross nurses in Chechnya, 1996 highlighted the risks faced by nurses working in foreign countries. Acts of violence against aid workers are often carried out by groups which have no political motivation but believe they may be able to make money from their activities. A two-week preparation course is offered to new recruits of Medecins Sans Frontieres, in a bid to equip new nurses with skills to get them through a terrorist ordeal.

The 'Nursing Times' campaign on the dangers of manual handling has increased nurses' awareness. The campaign supported European Community regulations on safe lifting. More nurses are using mechanical aids. Health authorities are investigating ergonomic improvements to facilitate access. Staff training in safe lifting is a priority. Some hospitals have completely abolished manual lifting.
