Inactive polio vaccine may not be cost effective

Article Abstract:

A study was made of the cost effectiveness of using the inactivated poliovirus vaccine versus the weakened, oral polio vaccine. The researchers determined that using an inactivated-only vaccination schedule would result in an additional net cost of $28 million annually. The additional net cost for following a sequential vaccination schedule, which would involve two doses of inactivated virus with two doses of the oral vaccine, would be $14.7 million. The study accounted for the additional cost for the change in the vaccination schedule coupled with cost savings from monetary awards.

Business of blood: the era of citizens rolling up their sleeves to donate for the common good may be fading, as market forces transform the blood collection system into a competitive industry

Article Abstract:

Competition among blood collection agencies has transformed from a community-minded activity to an industrial one. Only 5% of eligible US residents donate blood annually. Causes include the fear after the contamination of the blood supply with the HIV infection during the 1980s. There is also a variation in transfusion practices throughout the US.
