Increase in age at onset of rheumatoid arthritis in Japan over a 30 year period

Article Abstract:

People in Japan are developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA) much later in life but the reasons for this are not clear. Researchers analyzed the records of patients diagnosed with RA between 1960-1965 and 1985-1990. The age at which patients first presented with symptoms of RA rose from the 20's and 30's in 1960-1965 to the 40's and 50's in 1985-1990. However, the severity of the disease remained about the same. Many changes in lifestyle, socioeconomic status and public health occurred in the 30 years between the two time periods. Further research may reveal the reasons for this phenomenon.
