Increased polymorphism in the HR-1 gp41 env gene encoding the enfuvirtide (T-20) target in HIV-1 variants harboring multiple antiretroviral drug resistance mutations in the pol gene

Article Abstract:

The critical HR-1 gp41 polymorphism and the prevalence of mutations associated with T-20 resistance in T-20-naive and T-20-experienced patients are assessed according to the presence or absence of acquired resistance mutations to other antiretroviral drugs. The results have indicated that the HR-1 gp41 T-20 target is subjected to high genetic variability, including intrinsic polymorphism and selection of T-20 resistance mutations under T-20 intake.

Antiretroviral therapy in HIV-positive women is associated with increased apolipoproteins and total cholesterol

Article Abstract:

The prevalence of abnormal plasma lipid with lipoprotein concentration as well as other biomarkers for vascular disease was determined in 184 HIV-positive women, using a cross-sectional design. Results reveal that in this cross-sectional study of HIV-infected women, either protease inhibitor (PI) or nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) therapy elevated levels of total cholesterol and specific apolipoproteins.

Correlation of a brief perceived stress measure with nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy over time

Article Abstract:

The relationship between a revised version of the Perceived Stress Scale and nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy is explored. The scale also represents a viable alternative to other more labor-intensive psychologic measures, especially in institution and settings hampered by limited health care resources, where time spent clients and patients is already constrained.
