Infant water intoxication called newest epidemic

Article Abstract:

Infant water intoxication has put many infants each year at risk of seizures and respiratory failure. Traditionally, water intoxication has been rare and usually occurred through the improper use of intravenous fluids, during infant swim lessons or from child abuse. However, a recent rise in water intoxication due to large amounts of water given to infants in their formula has been noticed. Poverty is partially to blame as many parents or guardians of infants lack proper amounts of formula or dilute their formula with water to save money.

Two supposedly old-fashioned drugs, streptomycin and para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS), are being brought back to fight drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis. The rising number of resistant cases has alarmed the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Drug companies, including Glaxo Canada Inc and ICN Canada, are sending supplies of streptomycin and PAS to the CDC. Also, Pfizer Inc and Eli Lilly and Co are resuming production of streptomycin.
