Performance of Advanced Resuscitation Skills by Pediatric Housestaff

Article Abstract:

Pediatric medical residents trained in pediatric advanced life support generally perform resuscitative skills successfully, but frequently fail to correctly perform individual resuscitative techniques accurately and rapidly. Researchers observed 45 residents perform endotracheal intubation, defibrillation, and intraosseous line placement in a mannequin. Ninety-seven percent successfully used a mask ventilator, but only 53% used the correct ventilation bag. Eighty-nine percent discharged the defibrillator, but only 56% chose the correct defibrillation mode. The time required to perform these tasks was 68-149 seconds. Additional training on resuscitation details may be required.

Predictors of death and neurologic impairment in pediatric submersion injuries: the Pediatric Risk of Mortality score

Article Abstract:

The Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM) score can accurately predict severe neurological damage or death from near-drowning in children in the emergency department (ED). Researchers evaluated the scoring tool in 50 patients, aged 1 day to 18 years, who were injured in drowning or near-drowning accidents. ED patients with PRISM scores under 25 survived with intact neurologic function, while those with scores of 25 or more died or suffered severe neurologic damage. The PRISM score was not predictive of outcome in patients who required admission to the pediatric intensive care unit.
