Blood-borne and sexual transmission of human herpesvirus 8 in women with or at risk for human immunodeficiency virus infection

Article Abstract:

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) can be spread by intravenous drug use, according to a study of 1,295 women. This virus causes a tumor called Kaposi's sarcoma. It may also be transmitted sexually, since HIV infection and syphilis were risk factors for HHV-8 infection.

Influence of injection drug use behavior on reported antiretroviral therapy use among women in the HIV epidemiology research study: on-site versus referral care

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the use of antiretroviral therapy by HIV-infected injection drug users, including women. The authors report that at the on-site care centers women are likely to report antiretroviral therapy use regardless of injection drug use, whereas at referral sites only sexual contact identified women report any antiretroviral therapy use.

Comparison of clinical manifestations of HIV infection among women by risk group, CD4+ cell count, and HIV-1 plasma viral load

Article Abstract:

Women may have different complications of HIV infection depending on whether they acquired the virus through sexual intercourse or intravenous drug abuse. This was the conclusion of a study of 724 HIV-infected women, 387 of whom were IV drug addicts and 337 of whom acquired the virus through sexual intercourse. Some of the differences could be due to drug use. Women with medium to high viral levels were most likely to develop oral hairy leukoplakia and pseudomembranous candidiasis.
