Health-promoting schools in the Americas

Article Abstract:

In 1993 14 Latin American and Caribbean countries initiated a plan to develop Health-Promoting Schools in the region. The strategy calls for updating health education curricula, improving the hygiene of the school environment and improving health and nutrition services. The primary difficulty has been to apply the concepts in an integrated manner.

No junk food in the school canteen

Article Abstract:

A school in the city of Bulacan, Philippines was selected to be the first to participate in the Healthy School Initiative. The program emphasizes nutritional concerns by eliminating junk-food from the cafeteria and supporting vegetable and herb garden plantings. Health education has been integrated into other areas of school curriculum.
