Insurance industry stable, but look for consolidation
Article Abstract:
Health insurance companies have recovered from a spate of financial trouble that plagued them in 1991, but, nevertheless, slim operating margins will cause consolidation in the industry. A concentration of power in the hands of a few insurers will force physicians to contain costs better. Under extreme conditions, insurers might be more inclined than ever to challenge certain medical procedures. Firms intent on survival must demonstrate proficiency in managed care, claims administration and local health services.
