International Group of Health Experts Issues Global "Declaration to Stop TB"

Article Abstract:

Doctors and public health officials from all over the world met in Amsterdam in March, 2000 to discuss ways of stopping the spread of tuberculosis (TB). TB is closely linked to poverty and rapid social change. For this reason, 95% of all new cases and 98% of the deaths occur in deveoping countries. Every year 2 million people die of TB and 8 million new cases occur, and the number of new cases is increasing. People can be infected with the bacterium but not have any symptoms. This contributes to the spread of the infection because people may not know they are infected.

Increase in Global Access to Essential Drugs Sought

Article Abstract:

More than 350 people from over 50 countries, including policymakers, doctors, and representatives of industry, nongovernmental organizations, and consumer-oriented organizations met in Amsterdam in November, 1999 to discuss the impact of World Trade Organization policies on public health. One WTO policy is the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. This protects a pharmaceutical company's patent, which will make many drugs too expensive for patients in developing countries. TRIPS could also affect the availability of generic drugs.
