When is a memory not a memory? 'Recovered memories' of child abuse have sent people to prison. But some experts now doubt the value of such accounts in addressing the therapeutic needs of patients
Article Abstract:
The debate over the authenticity of unrecovered memory as an indication of child abuse potentially touches upon the relationship between primary care physicians and their patients. A legal backlash against recovered memory as a credible form of evidence has arisen in the courts. Physicians groups have established guidelines for physicians confronted with cases of recovered memory to follow. Physicians should seek to corroborate recovered memories with third parties to establish their authenticity.
