Investigating accidents: soon there will be a specific obligation on employers to investigate accidents

Article Abstract:

Issue concerning the investigation of accidents by UK employers are addressed. A model of accident investigations is presented, covering elements including the training of staff, the use of safe work procedures and the possibility of equipment failure.

DIY risk assessment

Article Abstract:

Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 effective from Jan 1 1993 requires that every UK employer records a risk assessment strategy. Failure to do so may result in criminal liability. The risks to employees and other persons need to be assessed. There are 5 important stages in the the risk assessment; identification of the hazards; consultation from all employees; assessment for risk rating; assessment for risk control and concluding whether existing measures are adequate and what improvements need to be made.

Article Abstract:

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations which implement the European Community directive on health and safety specifies that all employers must elect safety assistants. Legal distinction will be given to safety officers, quality managers and safety and quality consultants. Safety duties will cover not just employees but the identification, assessment, elimination and control of risks to anybody in contact with the company and its business, such as the public and contractors. The regulations include the safety of products and services and environmental management.
